Nigerian Puff Puff

Delightful fluffy balls of dough that are perfect for any occasion, these Nigerian Puff Puff are a must-try snack or treat.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups plain flour (or self-rising flour)
  • 2 1/4 tsp quick-rise yeast (instant dry yeast)
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar (or to your taste)
  • 1/2 tbsp salt
  • Lukewarm water
  • Vegetable oil (for frying)

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: In a small bowl, mix lukewarm water with the yeast and a teaspoon of sugar. Stir gently and let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. Combine the dry ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, and salt.
  3. Mix wet and dry: Pour the yeast mixture into the dry ingredients and combine until a sticky dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough: Turn it onto a floured surface and knead gently for about 3-5 minutes.
  5. Let it rise: Place the dough in a warm area, cover, and let it rise until doubled in size (about 1 hour).
  6. Heat the oil: Preheat oil in a deep pot to 350°F (175°C).
  7. Shape the Puff Puff: Pinch off pieces of dough, roll them into balls, and place on a floured surface.
  8. Deep-fry: Drop the dough balls into the hot oil and fry for about 3-4 minutes until golden brown.
  9. Cool and serve: Let Puff Puff cool slightly before serving. Optionally sprinkle with powdered sugar or serve with sauces.

Notes

Serve Puff Puff on a large platter, optionally with spicy dipping sauces. For variations, consider chocolate chip, spicy jalapeño, or coconut Puff Puff.
