French Onion Soup

A classic French dish featuring caramelized onions, rich beef broth, and topped with melted Gruyère cheese for a heartwarming comfort food experience.

  • 4 large yellow or sweet Onions
  • 6 cups Beef Broth
  • 1 or 2 Baguette
  • 2 cups Gruyère Cheese, shredded
  • 4 tablespoons Butter
  • 1 tablespoon Olive Oil
  • 1 teaspoon Fresh Thyme
  • Salt and Pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Slice the onions into thin rings, keeping slices uniform.
  2. Sauté in butter and oil over medium heat until they sweat and soften.
  3. Be patient and cook for 30 to 40 minutes until caramelized.
  4. Season with thyme, salt, and pepper once onions are golden brown.
  5. Deglaze the pot with a splash of water or broth if needed.
  6. Add the beef broth and simmer for about 20 minutes.
  7. Toast the sliced baguette in the oven until crispy.
  8. Cheese the soup by adding baguette and Gruyère to oven-safe bowls and broil until bubbly.

Notes

For a vegetarian option, substitute beef broth with vegetable broth. Experiment with additional toppings or spices for variations.
