Easy Shepherd’s Pie

A comforting and hearty dish made with savory ground meat, sweet veggies, and creamy mashed potatoes, perfect for family dinners.

  • 1 lb ground lamb or beef
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 1 cup peas
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 cup red wine
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 4 cups mashed potatoes
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Olive oil for cooking

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (205°C) and heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Sauté the chopped onion until translucent, about 3-4 minutes, then add the diced carrots and cook for another 3-5 minutes.
  3. Brown the ground lamb or beef, breaking it up with a spatula, until browned all over, about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Add the tomato paste and Worcestershire sauce, cooking for another minute, then pour in the red wine and simmer for a couple of minutes.
  5. Pour in the beef broth and stir in the peas, simmering for 5-10 minutes, then season with salt and pepper.
  6. Prepare the mashed potatoes, making them from scratch or heating pre-made ones.
  7. Assemble the pie by scooping the meat mixture into a baking dish and topping it with mashed potatoes.
  8. Bake for 25–30 minutes until the top is golden and crispy.

Notes

For a lighter version, substitute ground lamb or beef with ground turkey or a plant-based alternative. Customize by adding herbs or cheese.
