Delightful, fluffy balls of goodness perfect for gatherings or enjoying at home. A cherished recipe that brings nostalgia and joy.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup + 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup vegetable oil for frying
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg or cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water and yeast. Let sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. Mix the dry ingredients: In another bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, salt, and nutmeg (or cinnamon).
  3. Combine the mixtures: Add the frothy yeast to the dry mixture and stir until just combined.
  4. Knead the dough: Flour your countertop, turn out the dough and knead gently for about 3-4 minutes until smooth.
  5. First rise: Form dough into a ball, place in a greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour.
  6. Shape the Puff Puff: Punch down the risen dough and grease your hands with oil. Shape into balls the size of golf balls.
  7. Heat the oil: In a deep pan, heat vegetable oil over medium heat.
  8. Fry away: Carefully add dough balls to the hot oil and fry until golden brown on all sides, about 3-4 minutes per batch.
  9. Coat in sugar: Toss the warm Puff Puff in sugar to coat.
