French Onion Chicken Orzo Casserole

A cozy casserole that combines the flavors of French onion soup with tender chicken and creamy orzo.

  • 1 lb boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 2 cups orzo pasta
  • 2 large onions
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (such as Gruyère or mozzarella)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Olive oil
  • Fresh thyme (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Sauté the onions in a large skillet with olive oil over medium heat, adding a pinch of salt and cooking for 20–25 minutes until caramelized.
  3. Cook the chicken in the skillet until golden brown, about 3–4 minutes per side.
  4. Combine chicken broth, heavy cream, and cooked orzo in the skillet, stirring to mix well and season with salt and pepper.
  5. Add the shredded cheese and fold into the mixture.
  6. Transfer the mixture to a greased 9×13 inch casserole dish and bake for 25–30 minutes until the chicken is cooked through and the orzo has absorbed the liquid.
  7. Rest the casserole for 5 to 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

You can substitute orzo with small pasta shells or couscous if needed.
